Meta has decided to halt a program aimed at collecting employee activity data for the purpose of training artificial intelligence models, following privacy concerns raised by its workforce. This internal initiative, called the Model Capability Initiative, was designed to monitor various forms of employee computer interactions, including keyboard strokes, mouse movements, and on-screen content.
The program faced significant opposition from Meta employees, who raised alarms over issues of privacy, consent, and trust. In response, more than 1,600 employees signed a petition demanding that the company cease gathering data related to their computer usage. Despite Meta’s assurances that the program was equipped with privacy safeguards and that there had been no improper access to the data, the company has opted to pause the initiative to review its processes and data handling practices.
