Google is expanding its presence in Israel with the creation of a new engineering team dedicated to developing artificial intelligence chips specifically for edge devices, including robots and autonomous systems. The tech giant has tapped Guy Kaminitz, previously an R&D executive at Israeli AI chipmaker Hailo, to lead this silicon engineering initiative.
The new team aims to innovate in the field of Edge AI processors, which enable AI functions to be executed directly on devices rather than relying on cloud-based computing. This technology is crucial for a wide range of applications, including robots, drones, autonomous vehicles, industrial systems, and smart cameras.
In addition to appointing Kaminitz, Google is actively recruiting dozens of engineers for various roles such as chip validation, physical design, verification, automation, and machine-learning hardware architecture. These efforts underscore the company’s commitment to advancing AI capabilities directly on devices.
Google’s decision to form this specialized team in Israel builds on its existing operations in the country. The company expanded into chip design and development there in 2021 and has maintained research and development operations in Israel since 2005. These teams have been involved in critical areas like artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, and machine perception.
