US Strikes Break Ceasefire, Iran Issues Accusation

The United States has been accused by Iran of breaching a ceasefire following fresh American airstrikes targeting missile installations and vessels involved in mine-laying operations in southern Iran. This development has reignited regional tensions, causing a surge in global oil prices. Notably, Brent crude experienced an increase of over four percent after the strikes were announced.

Iran’s foreign ministry has criticized the actions of the US forces in the Hormozgan region, arguing that they contravened the ceasefire agreement. Tehran has issued a warning that it will retaliate against any further military actions. Reports from Iranian media indicated explosions near Bandar Abbas, close to the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the Revolutionary Guards claimed to have intercepted a US drone and confronted an American fighter jet near Iranian airspace.

According to US Senator Marco Rubio, the strikes were defensive measures intended to safeguard American forces from potential threats. He highlighted ongoing diplomatic negotiations in Qatar aimed at resolving the conflict. Rubio emphasized the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for global maritime trade, labeling any disruption as unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials revealed that discussions continue on a potential agreement that might involve the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets, as part of a broader framework to de-escalate hostilities. In response to the situation, China has urged both parties to adhere to the ceasefire and engage in peaceful dialogue to settle their differences.

The unrest has also had repercussions in neighboring Lebanon, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged stronger measures against Hezbollah. Reports suggest that Israeli forces have intensified military operations near the Lebanese border. In a related development, Iran has begun the gradual restoration of internet services after months of nationwide restrictions, with officials confirming that phased measures are underway.
