Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed new legislation aimed at penalizing citizens accused of harming the reputation of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) internationally. The legislative initiative includes two bills: one allowing for the revocation of citizenship and another enhancing penalties in defamation cases.
Netanyahu’s announcement follows controversy surrounding a documentary titled “NAZA,” which claims that the IDF used artificial intelligence in military operations in Gaza that resulted in civilian casualties. The Prime Minister specifically named opposition politician Yair Golan and filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor in connection with these allegations.
However, President Isaac Herzog expressed skepticism about the feasibility of revoking citizenship, describing the measure as unlikely to succeed. Herzog criticized the filmmakers’ claims but stressed that any grievances by soldiers should be handled through military channels.
Under current Israeli law, citizenship can be revoked for serious offenses like terrorism or treason, pending government and court approval. The IDF has dismissed the documentary’s assertions, maintaining that human personnel, not artificial intelligence, make the final decisions on military strikes.
The filmmakers have defended their work, arguing that their investigation is based on credible interviews and evidence. The situation has ignited a broader debate within Israel over issues of freedom of expression and military accountability concerning the Gaza conflict.
