Israel has halted a U.S.-led effort to construct a military base in Gaza, a crucial component of President Donald Trump’s post-war peace and reconstruction strategy. This stoppage has impeded the deployment of an international stabilization force intended to facilitate security and support reconstruction in the region.
The project, which had its first construction contract awarded to Louisiana-based Arkel International in August, was designed to house 150 international troops. These troops were expected to help establish secure conditions necessary for reconstruction and humanitarian operations in Gaza. Despite the plans, contractors have reportedly been blocked from accessing Gaza, causing delays that could impact the broader implementation of the Board of Peace initiative, established after the October 2025 ceasefire.
The planned military outpost was intended as a temporary and fortified facility to support rotational international troop deployments. Personnel from Morocco and Kosovo were reportedly assigned to this stabilization mission. Without the base, critical reconstruction efforts, such as delivering construction equipment, restoring essential utilities, and establishing basic civilian infrastructure, could face significant setbacks.
There is speculation that the project might progress following Israel’s elections scheduled for October 27, although no official confirmation has been provided regarding the timeline for construction. The Board of Peace has proposed a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza, including a six-month initiative worth $2.45 billion announced in September as part of a broader $71 billion effort over ten years.
Despite these plans, the situation in Gaza remains volatile. Continued Israeli strikes have been reported since the ceasefire, with local health authorities citing approximately 1,400 deaths in the period covered by recent reports. The delay in establishing the international military presence underlines the challenges in maintaining security, delivering aid, and initiating large-scale reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
