Meta Platforms has swiftly pulled back its Muse Image AI feature just days after its launch due to widespread backlash over privacy issues and its usage of public Instagram content. This move highlights the increasing scrutiny technology companies face regarding consent and privacy in AI innovations.
The tool, which was introduced earlier this week, allowed users to generate and modify AI-created images by utilizing publicly accessible photos from Instagram. Integrated into Meta AI, the feature enabled image editing through sketches and photo-based prompts, aiming to offer a creative outlet for users.
However, the rollout quickly met with criticism as it was activated by default for eligible users, sparking concerns about the lack of consent and the use of public images without explicit permission. The entertainment industry union SAG-AFTRA, along with several public figures, demanded the feature’s withdrawal, arguing that users should have been given the choice to opt in before their content was used in this manner.
In response to the feedback, Meta acknowledged that the feature did not align with users’ expectations and confirmed its removal. The company emphasized that its intention was to provide a creative tool while ensuring users had control over how their public content was referenced.
