Spotify is taking steps to address the growing presence of AI-generated music on its platform by introducing new measures to help users identify these artificial artists. Starting in September, the platform will label AI-created artist profiles and track listings with an “AI persona” tag. This initiative aims to make it easier for listeners to distinguish between human and AI-generated music, thereby safeguarding genuine musicians from being overshadowed by artificial content.
In addition to labeling, Spotify will default AI personas out of personalized recommendations. This move reflects the company’s effort to ensure that human artists retain visibility and that users are aware of whether the music they are enjoying is created by real individuals or artificial entities. To detect undisclosed AI personas, Spotify plans to employ a combination of human reviewers and AI-powered tools.
This decision comes as the prevalence of AI-generated music continues to rise significantly. Spotify has previously reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period, underscoring the substantial influx of artificial and often low-quality content into music platforms. The new labeling initiative is part of Spotify’s broader strategy to maintain transparency as generative AI becomes increasingly common in the music industry.
Spotify emphasizes the importance of transparency, as listeners are becoming more curious about the origin of the music they consume, particularly whether it is produced by an AI or a human artist. By allowing artists to disclose if their identities are AI-generated, Spotify is encouraging openness while also taking proactive steps to manage the surge of AI content on its platform.
