President Donald Trump issued a confident statement ahead of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying, “I think it’s going to work out very well.”
The “big meeting” is scheduled for Thursday in South Korea, during the APEC summit. Trump, speaking from Japan, called the upcoming talks “fantastic.”
This optimism is set against a backdrop of renewed trade friction. A recent calm was broken by Chinese rare earth controls and a subsequent US threat of 100% tariffs.
The dispute has also seen new US port fees and retaliatory measures from Beijing.
Trump, whose Asia trip has focused on trade, seems to be banking on this meeting to de-escalate the conflict, saying it will be “great for everybody.”
