Shifting Gears: Daniel Ek Drives Spotify’s Future from Chairman’s Seat

Daniel Ek is shifting gears at Spotify, moving from the driver’s seat of daily operations to the navigator’s position focused on the road ahead. The founder is stepping down as CEO after nearly 20 years to become the executive chairman, a role dedicated to long-term strategy and innovation.

Taking the wheel will be the duo of Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström, who will be appointed co-CEOs on January 1st. Their partnership is built on a strong foundation, as they currently serve as co-presidents and have been leading the company’s strategic and operational efforts since 2023.

Spotify described the transition as a move to “formalize” its existing leadership structure, a point echoed by Ek. He stated that the change brings job titles into alignment with the reality of how the company has been managed by Söderström and Norström for some time.

As executive chairman, Ek will concentrate on Spotify’s “long arc,” ensuring the company stays at the forefront of technological change and global expansion. He specifically mentioned AI and growth in regions like Asia and Africa as key priorities, reaffirming his commitment to keeping the company forward-thinking.

This strategic move allows Ek to leverage his experience and vision to guide Spotify through its next evolutionary phase, while empowering a new generation of leadership to execute on the company’s ambitious goals.
