New 62-Mile Trail is a ‘Perfect’ Autumn Getaway

A newly launched 62-mile (100km) trail through the Peak District is being called “almost perfect” for an autumn getaway. The Steel Cotton Rail Trail, with its 14 day-length, rail-linked sections, offers an ideal way to experience the “magical moods” of the season.

The trail, which links Manchester and Sheffield, is a sensory delight in autumn. Walkers will hear the “loud crunch of dry acorns and beech nuts” underfoot, a sign of a “mast year.” The “golds, reds and ochres” of leaf litter create a beautiful carpet along the woodland and riverside paths.

The “classic northern autumn day” of mizzle and mist only adds to the atmosphere, filtering the world “but for the glow of dead leaves.” When the mist burns off, the trail’s higher sections reward walkers with sudden, “much bigger views” over the valleys.

The trail’s 14 sections allow visitors to “choose their challenge.” Whether you want a level walk along the historic Peak Forest Tramway or a misty moorland climb, there is a route for you. The convenient train access at each end makes planning a day-trip simple.

This new, well-marked trail is a fantastic way to escape the city. It’s an invitation to “amble” and “ruminate” through one of the most “eye-calming” landscapes, all while soaking in the best of the autumn season.
