Peace Agreement Hopes Diminish as Russia Threatens Negotiation Withdrawal

Hopes for a peace agreement have diminished as Russia threatens to withdraw from negotiations following allegations of a Ukrainian attack on President Putin’s residence. US President Donald Trump, informed of the incident by Putin, expressed his frustration with the timing.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that Ukraine launched 91 unmanned aerial vehicles toward Putin’s Novgorod region property. He stated that while all drones were intercepted and destroyed, the incident demonstrated Ukraine’s shift to what he characterized as “state terrorism.”

Trump’s public statements emphasized his concern about targeting leadership residences during peace negotiations. Speaking to reporters in Florida, he acknowledged Ukraine’s military operations but suggested that attacks on a world leader’s home fundamentally undermine diplomatic efforts.

Ukrainian President Zelensky categorically rejected the allegations as fabricated propaganda. He accused Russia of creating a false narrative to justify planned strikes against Ukrainian government buildings and to derail the constructive dialogue established with Trump’s administration.

The controversy emerged just one day after Trump and Zelensky met and expressed optimism about peace prospects. The Kremlin’s announcement that Russia would reassess its negotiating position demonstrates how quickly hope for agreement has diminished.
